Inclusive Facilitator Checklist

Opening processes to broader engagement is an important step towards partnership and equitable decision-making. Engagement can help to advance a new initiative, project, service, or plan and while fostering alignment with affected stakeholders whose voices are not often incorporated. But common missteps can result in engagement that is extractive, opaque, or one-sided in nature, heightening participation fatigue and mistrust between stakeholders and decision-makers that represent them. The Inclusive Facilitator Checklist is a tool to help practitioners better ascertain power and positionality, question assumptions, and understand important values of information symmetry and transparency, authenticity, and equitable access and representation.
